Five Northern Michigan hikes to see the fall colors
Northern Michigan’s dramatic seasons are one of the things we love most about living Up North. While we’re not ready to say goodbye to summer, we are looking forward to red wine weather and the beautiful colors that usher in Autumn.
We’re sharing some of our favorite hikes to see the fall colors in Northern Michigan and some local tips to make a day of it!
AVALANCHE MOUNTAIN Boyne City, MI
Avalanche Mountain Preserve in Boyne City is stunning year-round and at its best in fall. The views from the top of the former municipal ski hill look over Lake Charlevoix and on a clear day, you can see all the way out to Lake Michigan. Take a leisurely hike up the 2.5 mile trail up the back of the Mountain or a 462-step stair climb from the parking lot.
Local‘s Tip: Hit the trails on a Saturday morning with enough time to visit the charming Boyne City Farmers Market. Stock up on local produce and don’t pass on the crepes!
SKYLINE TRAIL Petoskey, MI
Part of the North Country Trail system that cuts through the Petoskey area, the Skyline Trail is one of the more challenging hikes on this list. The steep climb down to the overlook is well worth the views of Little Traverse Bay and surrounding forest. The narrow, sandy path takes you through wild raspberry patches and tall pine forest. Make sure to keep an eye out for the sign for the overlook, it can be a little tricky to spot!
Local’s Tip: After your hike, head over to Petoskey Farms Vineyard & Winery for a glass of wine and continue taking in the fall colors with views of the Joy Valley from their patio.
NUBS NOB Harbor Springs, MI
Nubs Nob is a beloved local ski hill in the winter and voted fan-favorite by our Instagram followers among local ski resorts for hiking. Follow the snowshoe “orange” trail all the way to the peak and take in the view of Little Traverse Bay. The full loop is approximately 5 miles.
Local’s Tip: Take a drive up Pleasantview to Robinson Road to Moose Jaw Junction for fried perch and a cold beer in the middle of nowhere. The elevation along this drive boasts some stunning views and significantly less traffic than the nearby Tunnel of Trees.
ODEN STATE FISH HATCHERY Alanson, MI
The Oden State Fish Hatchery is the gentlest and most kid-friendly hike on this list, with lots of fun attractions along the way including a rail car, underwater fish viewing area and lots of ducks and fish. There is both a short, paved path to the fishponds and a longer rustic trail that takes you back to the broodstock facility.
Local’s Tip: Bring a steaming cup of coffee and hike the trail in the morning while it’s still quiet! We’ve spotted otters, eagles and osprey on these quiet mornings.
GRASS RIVER NATURAL AREA Bellaire, MI
Grass River Natural Area is a fascinating northern fen and cedar wetlands. Take the boardwalk loop to the Grass River to see the uniquely preserved ecosystem and serene views of the river. This is a great birding trail too! No pets allowed on these trails though.
Local’s Tip: After your hike, grab a beer and pizza at Short’s Pub in downtown Bellaire. They have fun rotating taps only available at the pub and the food is always excellent!
